Honoring God with Our Fertility

We live in a society that does not place too high of a value on children, or the women who raise them. There is a lack of respect for mothers who choose motherhood as their life’s calling, rather than an outside career. Even within bible believing congregations, it is very common to condemn large families as irresponsible. It has been difficult for me at times to fully accept that my “job” is being a mother. I homeschool. I take care of my children. I manage our household. It is quite a lot of work! But, I felt like I had to have something else too. Not for myself, but for the sake of other’s judgements.

I do not have any desire to tell other married couples what to do, but I want to share a little about how I believe being open to life has blessed me.

1 Cor 6:19-20 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,  for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

We live in a very individual centered society. The focus is on what we want. But the Way of Christ is not like that. He laid down his very life for the will of his Father, and we are asked to do the same. We have been bought with a price.

We can honor our bodies, and therefore our Father. Or we can dishonor our bodies, through sexual sin and other sins. We know that we have a good father who we can trust. His commandments are good, and bring life. He is the God of the living!

Genesis 49:25 May the God of your father help you; may the Almighty bless you with the blessings of the heavens above, and blessings of the watery depths below, and blessings of the breasts and womb.

Fertility is a blessing. There is not a single instance of women or men who do not want children in the Bible. Not once did they ever say “you know what God? Not now. It’s a bad time” or “I have other plans, sorry” or “I can’t afford them”.

Deut 28:11 Yahweh will grant you abundant prosperityin the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your ground—in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.

Children are an abundant prosperity! We want bigger houses, bigger cars, and less children. That is not the vision of our Creator. He gives children as a gift, as prosperity, as a heritage.

Deut 28:17 The fruit of your womb will be cursed, and the crops of your land, and the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.

Hosea 9:14 Give them, O Yahweh— what will you give? Give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.

Infertility is a curse. Yet, women are now using poisons and surgeries to curse themselves with barrenness. We have been mislead, and deceived.

There is so much love and connection between husband and wife when life is a possibility they leave open. Consider how even the Israelites when they were in slavery, with the threat of death to their newborn sons, the bible says they grew even larger! They had even more babies, including Moses, who we all know was chosen before birth to rescue them. What if Jochebed, Moses’s mother, had said “you know what? life is too hard right now, I won’t be open to a baby”? We mere humans can only see the limited picture. We allow fear to come in and sway us. We lean on our own understanding.

I want to discuss this subject more, because I think it is important.

Lets all pray to be open to the Word, even when it goes against our culture.

Shalom.
